*ARM and GLOBALFOUNDRIES to Optimize Next-Generation ARM Mobile Processors for 28nm-SLP Process Technology*

New ARM POP technology provides core-hardening acceleration for Cortex-A12 and Cortex-A7 processors

MILPITAS, Calif. & CAMBRIDGE, U.K.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In conjunction with the launch of the ARM® Cortex®-A12 processor, ARM and GLOBALFOUNDRIES today announced new power, performance and cost-optimized POP™ technology offerings for the ARM Cortex-A12 and Cortex-A7 processors for GLOBALFOUNDRIES 28nm-SLP High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) process technology. The Cortex-A12 processor was introduced by ARM today as part of a suite of IP targeting the rapidly growing market for mid-range mobile devices.

The companies will combine ARM's next-generation mobile processor and POP IP with GLOBALFOUNDRIES 28nm-SLP HKMG process solution, enabling a new level of system performance and power efficiency with the optimum economics necessary to serve the mid-range mobile device market. The new initiative builds on the existing robust ARM Artisan® physical IP platform and POP IP for the Cortex-A9 processor already available on GLOBALFOUNDRIES 28nm-SLP, signifying another milestone in the multi-year collaboration between ARM and GLOBALFOUNDRIES.

Central to this increase in functionality for mid-range mobile devices is the new ARM Cortex-A12processor. The Cortex-A12processor provides a 40 percent performance uplift and direct upgrade path from the incredibly successful Cortex-A9 processor, while matching the energy efficiency of its predecessor. The Cortex-A12 processor provides best-in-class efficiency as a standalone solution, but additionally supports the innovative big.LITTLE™ processing technology with the Cortex-A7 processor, bringing this energy-efficient technology to the mid-range. GLOBALFOUNDRIES 28nm-SLP process technology and associated ARM POP IP for the Cortex-A12 processor enables up to 70 percent higher performance (measured single-thread performance) and up to 2x better power efficiency in comparison to a Cortex-A9 processor using 40nm process technology. Designers can achieve even higher performance by trading off for lower power efficiency, depending on their application needs. Click here for more information on the Cortex-A12 processor.

The newest POP technology enables customers to accelerate core-hardening of Cortex-A12 and Cortex-A7 processors on GLOBALFOUNDRIES 28nm-SLP HKMG process. POP IP for Cortex processors has successfully enabled ARM-based SoCs with more than 30 different licenses since being introduced over three years ago. POP IP is composed of three elements necessary to achieve an optimized ARM processor implementation: core-specific tuned Artisan physical IP logic libraries and memory instances, comprehensive benchmarking reports, and implementation knowledge that detail the methodology used to achieve the result, to enable the end customer to achieve the same implementation quickly and at low risk.

"With 580 million mid-range smartphones and tablets forecast to be sold in 2015^[i], consumers are increasingly looking for the right combination of performance, low power and cost effectiveness," said Dr. Dipesh Patel, executive vice president and general manager, Physical IP Division at ARM. "With the Cortex-A12 processor and suite of IP announced today, ARM is delivering an optimized system solution leveraging the most innovative technologies available for this market. The POP IP solution on GLOBALFOUNDRIES 28nm-SLP helps designers balance the performance, power and cost tradeoffs to achieve their targets for this growing market."

GLOBALFOUNDRIES 28nm-SLP technology is ideally suited for the next generation of smart mobile devices, enabling designs with faster processing speeds, smaller feature sizes, lower standby power and longer battery life. The technology is based on GLOBALFOUNDRIES' "Gate First" approach to High-K Metal Gate (HKMG), which has been in volume production for more than two years. The technology offers a combination of performance, power efficiency and cost that is ideally suited for the mid-range mobile market.

"GLOBALFOUNDRIES is committed to a deep relationship with ARM to enable best-in-class solutions for our mutual customers. Our collaboration on the ARM Cortex-A12 processor implementation is a direct result of this focus and collaboration," said Mike Noonen, executive vice president of Marketing, Sales, Design and Quality at GLOBALFOUNDRIES.

GLOBALFOUNDRIES' next-generation 14nm-XM FinFET technology is expected to bring another dimension of enhanced power, performance and area for ARM mobile processors. A Cortex-A9 processor implemented on 14nm-XM technology, using 9-track libraries, is projected to enable a greater than 60 percent increase in frequency at constant power, or a decrease of more than 60 percent in power consumption at constant performance, when compared to implementation on 28nm-SLP technology using 12-track libraries. Similar results are expected for Cortex-A12 processor implementations. Click here for more details on GLOBALFOUNDRIES' 14nm-XM FinFET technology.

For further discussions about GLOBALFOUNDRIES process technologies or ARM IP offerings please visit the companies' respective exhibits at the Design Automation Conference (DAC), June 3-5, 2013 in Austin, Texas. ARM is located in booth 931, and GLOBALFOUNDRIES can be found at booth 1314.

Review: 16GB fifth-generation iPod touch comes down to cash, capacity, and camera

For a while, Apple has been selling two generations of iPod touch side by side: the 16GB and 32GB, 3.5-inch, Retina display fourth-generation versions and the 32GB and 64GB, 4-inch, Retina fifth-generation models. That confusion finally ended when Apple recently introduced a 4-inch 16GB iPod touch and in the process killed off the older fourth-generation for good.

Did I say the confusion ended? Well, sort of. In most ways, the $229 16GB fifth-generation iPod touch is identical to the 32- and 64GB fifth-generation models released in October 2012. It has the same 4-inch Retina display, the same dual-core A5 processor, the same front-facing FaceTime HD camera (with its 1.2-megapixel photos and 720p video capabilities), the same bundled Lightning cable and remote-less EarPods, and the same dimensions. The 16GB model is in fact notable only for what it lacks: It offers no rear-facing iSight camera, no strap post (and therefore no strap), and no choice in colors (this model comes only with a black face and silver back).

Given that it has no new or improved capabilities over its higher-capacity siblings, your buying choice is nicely narrowed down to just a few factors: Money, storage space, and what you want from an iPod touch’s camera.

UK's Young People Lead World's Wireless Generation

UK's Young People Lead World's Wireless Generation *José María Álvarez-Pallete, Telefónica COO*

Telefónica UK has released the results of the largest ever global survey of Generation Y Millennials aged 18 to 30.  Working with the Financial Times, the network operator spoke to more than 12,000 young people across 27 countries and six regions.

They found 76 per cent of this ‘always on’ group now owns a smartphone – this is highest in Asia, at 83 per cent, and lowest in Central and Eastern Europe, at 60 per cent. 68 per cent of those surveyed believe that they have the opportunity to be an entrepreneur, while 79 per cent believe the best days of their country are yet to come. “This ‘yes I can’ attitude is very refreshing,” said  José María Álvarez-Pallete, Chief Operating Officer of Telefónica, who outlined the findings at the launch event. “It is very different from a generation ago.”

Telefonica claims to have identified a new kind of elite – 11 per cent of Millennials globally - who are not defined by metrics like socioeconomic status, but by their access to technology and opportunity. While their immediate priorities are the same – family, school and friends come first – 44 per cent of these leaders believe access to technology is important to success, compared to 30 per cent overall. “These people are at the cutting edge of technology and highly interested in what happens around them from a political standpoint. Politicians around the world must see that technology is going to influence the future. But this is not just for government but for business leaders too,” he said.

*Tech skills are critial for work, say UK Millennials*

The UK’s young people are more tech savvy than their global counterparts, the survey found, where 49 per cent say they have an excellent knowledge of technology compared to just 30 per cent worldwide. Education in technology is now seen as more important than any other subject, with 25 per cent saying it is critical to future success, compared to economics and science both at 18 per cent, or languages with just eight per cent. 76 per cent believe technology makes it easier to get a job.

But a “new gender gap was outlined by Álvarez-Pallete, with men around the world much more likely to consider themselves at the cutting edge of tech – 80 per cent vs 69 per cent - to say it has been influential in shaping their outlook – 39 per cent vs 22 per cent - and to say tech is the most important factor to ensuring future success – 42 per cent vs 29 per cent.

Julian Genachowski, former chairman of the US telecoms regulator the FFC and head of Obama’s tech strategy during the 2008 election, offered his thoughts to the FT's Sarah Gordon in the event’s first keynote interview. “The mobile revolution will change so many things around the world in the next 10 years we can only begin to imagine,” he said.

*Global bandwith race, says former Obama advisor*

He argued that we are now engaged in a “global bandwidth race” as the internet become the “general purpose technology” of the 21st century just as electricity was the platform during the “appliance century”. Instead of fridges, TVs and radios, the broadband world is about applications. During 2011 and 2012, the US installed more fibre optic cable than the whole of Western Europe combined and only less than China. Genachowski said that Barack Obama was very conscious that the US had fallen behind on broadband connectivity and 3G.  Although that has been rectified, he said: “In this new world it would be dangerous to think that because any other country or region had a lead on a particular metric at a particular time that that is set in stone – it’s not.

He said that consumers are the winners in this situation. “This is great news for consumers, great news for early stage entrepreneurs: the Millennials who have the next big idea to change the world and the Millennials who want to change their neighbourhood.

He said that the internet is now crucial for creating jobs, finding a job, applying for a job, and more often than not, doing a job. “More than 75 per cent of Fortune 500 companies in the US do all of their job posting online. Broadband internet, wired and wireless, is today a platform for economic activity and for reforming areas like education and healthcare.”  But he also highlighted that fewer than 1bn people have access to the internet. “We are going to go to 5bn broadband connections in, if you’re an optimist five years, if you’re a pessimist 10 years, but it’s going to happen.”

New Energy Meets Milestones, Allowing Advancement of Next-Generation Electricity-Generating Coatings Filed under: Investing

*New Energy Meets Milestones, Allowing Advancement of Next-Generation Electricity-Generating Coatings for Glass Windows*

COLUMBIA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- New Energy Technologies, Inc. (OTCQB: NENE), developer of the world's first-of-its-kind, see-through technology capable of generating electricity on glass and flexible plastics, announced today that researchers have achieved important device design, architecture, and transparency goals which now allow the Company to advance and expand development efforts of its electricity-generating coatings. These expanded research efforts are directed at a specific layer of the coatings, composed largely of polymers, which can be applied to flexible plastics and glass to create tinted, see-through windows able to generate electricity.

New Energy's See-Through Polymers Generate Electricity on Glass Windows (Photo: New Energy Technologies, Inc.)

"We've worked hard to achieve a series of specific technical milestones focused on transparency, color, scale-up, and manufacturability of our SolarWindow™ technology," explained Mr. John A. Conklin, President and CEO of New Energy Technologies, Inc. "I'm proud to announce today that these achievements have allowed us to expand our development program to now include concurrent development of polymers for new coatings with improved properties."

Among important technical milestones recently achieved by researchers include:

1) A new patent-pending technique for spraying electricity-generating coatings on to glass while enabling improved properties
2) A 200% improvement in performance
3) Reduced fabrication from days to hours, down to one-sixth the original time
4) Increased transparency of SolarWindow™, referred to as 'visible light transmission'
5) Improved coating uniformity and aesthetic appeal
6) A significantly expanded patent portfolio

New Energy's development of proprietary polymers aims to expand the Company's range of potential applications and customized products, beyond electricity-generating windows. Additionally, researchers are keen to leverage new and improved polymers to further enhance product durability and performance - important considerations to the commercial launch of the Company's SolarWindow™ technology.

"In addition to bolstering our product performance, the development of the polymer layers could further strengthen our patent portfolio. A strong IP position will ensure that we minimize, if not entirely preclude, potential future competitors from encroaching on our proprietary technology," concluded Mr. Conklin.

Currently in development for eventual commercial deployment in the estimated 85 million commercial buildings and homes in America, SolarWindow™ technology is the subject of fourteen (14) patent filings and is the world's first-of-its-kind technology capable of generating electricity on see-through glass windows.

*About New Energy Technologies, Inc.*

New Energy Technologies, Inc., together with its wholly owned subsidiaries, is a developer of next generation alternative and renewable energy technologies. Among the Company's technologies under development are:

· *MotionPower™* roadway systems for generating electricity by capturing the kinetic energy produced by moving vehicles - a patent-pending technology, the subject of 45 US and International patent applications. An estimated 250 million registered vehicles drive more than six billion miles on America's roadways, every day; and
· *SolarWindow™* technologies, which enable see-through windows to generate electricity by 'spraying' their glass surfaces with New Energy's electricity-generating coatings - the subject of 14 patent applications. These solar coatings are less than 1/10th the thickness of 'thin' films and make use of the world's smallest functional solar cells, shown to successfully produce electricity in a published peer-reviewed study in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy of the American Institute of Physics.

Through established relationships with universities, research institutions, and commercial partners, we strive to identify technologies and business opportunities on the leading edge of renewable energy innovation. Unique to our business model is the use of established research infrastructure owned by the various institutions we deal with, saving us significant capital which would otherwise be required for such costs as land and building acquisition, equipment and capital equipment purchases, and other start-up expenses. As a result, we are able to benefit from leading edge research while employing significantly less capital than conventional organizations.
