Assures Data Protection Globally in Accordance with New Mandate

HOUSTON, June 20, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- *HITEC, Booth #1615 *--* *Nomadix Inc., the innovator and pioneer of public access gateways, has announced that its entire range of products is in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) mandate that became effective May 25, 2018. This includes Nomadix’s full line of gateway products, its Alloc8 deep packet inspection appliances, all services associated with existing products, as well as a commitment to ensuring that future products and services will remain in compliance.GDPR replaces the 1995 EU Data Protection Directive. The new mandate unifies the data protection rules across Europe and strengthens the rights of EU citizens by emphasizing transparency, fairness and accountability. GDPR compliance affects all businesses, regardless of location, that do business with the EU or citizens of the EU.

“Nomadix takes data protection and privacy very seriously,” said Nomadix President Fred Reeder. “As such, we continuously update our products to ensure the protection of personal data. With the announcement that all our products and services are GDPR-compliant, our partners and customers have the added assurance that Nomadix products are secure and meet the data protection regulatory requirements that preserve the rights of EU citizens, thus giving our partners an added way to get their businesses compliant.”

A significant component of Nomadix’s compliance with GDPR revolves around data for both customers and subscribers. All customer data is stored on secure systems owned or operated by Nomadix or its service vendors. Nomadix has also amended, eliminated or minimized the collection of personal information – and the company does not send marketing materials to individuals who have shared business cards with Nomadix employees. For subscribers, Nomadix does not transmit any subscriber data to its servers without prior written consent. Nomadix also now requires an additional GDPR agreement from its system integrators and customers before it can process any support data that might contain subscribers’ personal information.

Concludes Reeder, “The penalties for those who fail to comply with GDPR are significant. Fines can be €20M or 4 percent of revenue, whichever is greater. Our customers and partners can rest assured that Nomadix is and always will be committed to making data security a top priority, and that we will comply with mandatory privacy laws worldwide, including GDPR.”

Angela Ahrendts Talks Apple Retail in New Interview: 'Retail is Not Dying, But it Has to Evolve'

Apple senior vice president of retail Angela Ahrendts gave a new interview today at Cannes Lions, an annual international festival in France that celebrates individuals and companies in creative spaces. During her talk, Ahrendts discussed a variety of topics related to Apple and its pivot away from retail "stores" over the last few years to become community gathering places (via NBC News).

Thank you to the creative community who joined us at #CannesLions today to hear about #TodayatApple and how our retail experience inspires learning, unlocks creativity and encourages human connection. pic.twitter.com/64i4NL9SeY

— Angela Ahrendts (@AngelaAhrendts) June 20, 2018

Ahrendts' discussion also included Apple vice president of marketing communications Tor Myhren, and the SVP of retail explained that Apple's approach is to be "in the human business" and to "humanize technology."I love the creative arts... that's kind of when we came up with the tagline: maybe we're in the human business. Maybe the largest tech company has these 65,000 kids and maybe it's our job to humanize technology.

Looking to the future of retail in general, Ahrendts mentioned numbers from an analytic firm that suggest while the majority of shopping will move online, many customers will still venture out to physical locations to finalize a purchase. This means that shoppers will use apps and online websites to research products and items, and perhaps reserve them for in-store pickup, much like Apple already does today. You have your instincts and you use a lot of smart outside guys, and the smart outside guys they don't say retail is dying. They say digital is gonna grow at three times the rate of physical, but in the next five years... 75 percent of people will shop online, shop to learn [about what they want to buy], but 75 percent of business will still be done in physical stores.

Because of this, Ahrendts explained that "retail isn't going away" or "dying," but it will have to "evolve" as time passes. Apple has already made moves to change up Apple retail locations with next-generation layouts that emphasize communal gathering and encourage interactivity during Today at Apple sessions. This plays into another of Ahrendts' talking points in the interview, when she said, "I think [retail] has to serve a bigger purpose than just selling."

Some really interesting insight on the future of retail from Apple's @AngelaAhrendts!

Ahrendts also discussed an internal social network that Apple calls "Loop," which was built for the company to measure how well it is doing in its retail mission to keep customers happy, accomplished through surveying both customers and retail employees. Loop is examined by Ph.D. students and results in data that helps Apple executives "improve systems" surrounding its retail business.

Ahrendts went on to discuss Apple store employees:“They are not hired to sell," she said. "There is no commission, no quotas. What we’ve tried to do is keep uniting them around the big vision and the impact we want to make.”

Ahrendts routinely discusses Apple's next-generation retail plans in interviews, and last year even appeared onstage at the iPhone X event to briefly talk about retail and Today at Apple sessions. Shortly following that September event, Ahrendts climbed to the 13th spot on Fortune's Most Powerful Women list for 2017, jumping from 14th in 2016 and 16th in 2015.Tags: Angela Ahrendts, Apple retail

Technology could help predict the next refugee crisis — here's how

Technology could help predict the next refugee crisis — here's how By Rana Novack, Offering Owner, IBM Refugee & Migration Predictive Analytics

“Do you really think we would do anything differently?”

It’s a question I’m asked repeatedly, and one that I’ve struggled with often as war’s veil of grief and destruction has slowly, cruelly fallen over my family in Syria.

As my relatives have dispersed to whichever corner of the world they could safely reach, I’ve hoped and prayed that people – policy makers, immigration officers, the whole world, sometimes even my relatives themselves – would have done things differently. It’s a question I’ve asked myself in hindsight when I’ve been disappointed, time and time again.

I am a first-generation Syrian American, and since the war began I’ve realized that almost everything I thought I knew about refugees and how the world responds to them was wrong. Here’s what I’ve learned as I’ve had to re-think what it means to be displaced by conflict — and what we can do about it.

1. It’s not them — it’s us. My first mistake was thinking everything would be fine. Maybe I was just hopeful. When the protests began, I thought the unrest would pass quickly. When it turned violent, I was worried, but I thought, “It’s isolated to a few far away areas.” Then, the violence spread, and it became clear that it wasn’t just going to go away. I also realized that what was happening in Syria, to people I loved, could happen anywhere to anyone. For so long, I had thought of refugees as them. Now, it was us.

2. There’s no place like home. My second mistake was thinking anyone would want to leave. One night, when the violence had been intense near my family’s neighborhood, I was speaking with my aunt in Syria, tearfully pleading with her to leave. I’ll never forget what she said next: that she couldn’t because her daughter had a doctor’s appointment.

I was speechless. Was it worth risking your life for a doctor’s appointment? But then, something shifted, and I understood in a way I hadn’t before: It wasn’t as simple as just getting out. How do you make the choice to take your children and go, not knowing when they would next see a doctor? How do you leave the only place, the only life, you have ever known? There I was, asking her to leave, from the safety of my home without the slightest understanding of what I was suggesting in asking her to leave her own.

Because there wasn’t a safe way out, in many ways leaving had become a greater risk than staying. And while millions have left, they have done so at great personal risk and sacrifice.

3. We’re confined by our own constructs. My third mistake was thinking they could go, even if they wanted to. When my relatives did finally make the impossible choice to leave, every visa they applied for was denied. I realized it wasn’t the conflict keeping them confined; it was the rest of the world that had closed their doors. There was no plan, no established pathway to safety  — and people were dying either because of the conflict or on the way out.

**Reimagining a refugee crisis**

At the time, I was working at IBM and learning about predictive modeling, analytics, and cognitive computing. I began wondering if there might be a way to apply predictive technology to a refugee crisis. What if we had seen this coming? What could we have done differently?

Clearly, we would have had an opportunity. In a connected, cognitive world, we could analyze trends in data, learn from past migrations, and respond proactively, making policy decisions ahead of time, deploying humanitarian resources early, and establishing safe exit routes.

That vision became the basis of IBM’s Refugee & Migration Predictive Analytics Solution prototype. It’s a tool to determine where people are going and how they are getting there, and to look for trends and correlations in data to help identify the drivers of a migration to empower government agencies and humanitarian organizations with the right information ahead of time. The IBM Foundation is now working with the Danish Refugee Council to refine the solution in support of future humanitarian crises.

I can hear it now: "But even if we had perfect information … do you really think we would do anything differently?”

And my answer is: Of course I do.

Isn’t that what technology is for? It exists to make our world smarter, to help solve tough, complex challenges, to enable insight, and more informed decision making. But building technology-based solutions is only part of the answer. It’s up to us to act on the information and insights they provide. It’s up to us to be responsible, decent, and human.

In the age of technological disruption, we have the tools to disrupt displacement. We can evolve our measure of success for a refugee crisis response from basic survival and expand our focus to other diaspora-related issues  — pandemics, climate, famine, the global economy — exponentially driving technology to serve humanity.

In honor of World Refugee Day on June 20, let’s rethink how we support populations in crisis. Let’s commit to making a concerted effort to applying technology responsibly for the more than 65 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, and the millions who may soon follow them. Then, maybe we won’t do anything differently – we’ll do everything differently.

2018 Volvo S60 to face 3 Series with keener handling and plug-in variants

Newly revealed S60 will be offered in the UK next year with a choice of four petrol engines, two of which will be electrified

The new Volvo S60, a sports saloon designed to rival the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, has been unveiled in Charleston, South Carolina – and company bosses have promised the machine will be a “true driver’s car".

The new machine was unveiled in the new US factory that will be its sole global production site. It is built on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), and shares much of its technology with the recently launched V60 estate.

*Volvo opens first US factory ahead of S60 reveal*

Henrik Green, Volvo’s research and development boss, said: “The active chassis and driving modes deliver excellent control and an engaged platform that makes this a driver’s car.”

Due to go on sale early next year, the S60 will be offered in the UK with a choice of four petrol engines including two plug-in hybrids, part of Volvo’s pledge to offer electrified versions of all new models from 2019 onwards. No diesel engines will be offered.

The plug-in hybrid engines include Volvo’s supercharged 2.0-litre T8 Twin Engine, which produces a combined 385bhp, with the 299bhp petrol engine driving the front wheels and the 65kW electric unit powering the rear axle. That model offers 472lb ft and can achieve 0-62mph in 4.9secs on its way to a top speed of 155mph.

The T8 Twin Motor will also be offered with a ‘Polestar Engineered’ performance upgrade, developed by Volvo’s new performance sub-brand. That upgrade includes revamped wheels, brakes, suspension and a tweaked engine ECU which boosts combined power to 409bhp.

The Polestar Engineered S60 produces 494lb ft, and is 0.2secs faster to 62mph than the regular version. The maximum speed is unchanged.

The entry level S60 engine is the 246bhp four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged T5, offered with front-wheel drive, a 0-62mph time of 6.5secs and a claimed WLTP fuel economy ranging from 7.2-8.1l/km.

The other option for UK buyers is the T6 supercharged all-wheel-drive unit with 306bhp.

That unit will also be offered with a plug-in hybrid option. Every engine option is driven through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The S60 is 4761mm long, 2040mm wide (including mirrors) and 1431mm high, with a wheelbase of 2872mm. It will weigh from 1680kg, and has up to 442 litres of storage. The car sports double wishbone front suspension, with an integral axle at the rear.

As well as the SPA platform and exterior styling, the S60 shares the V60’s safety and Sensus Connect infotainment systems. These include optional Pilot Assist system, and City Safety autonomous braking capability.

UK pricing has yet to be confirmed, although sources suggest it is likely to be similar to the V60 estate, which starts from £31,810, putting it roughly on par with the equivalent A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class models.

The S60 will be available through Volvo’s new Care by Volvo subscription service, allowing people paying a set monthly fee for access to cars without owning one.

The S60 will be built at Volvo’s new Charleston factory, which was officially inaugurated today. The £772-million-pound facility, which has been under construction since 2015, will employ around 1500 people initially. That will expand to 4000 when it reached full capacity of 150,000 cars annually.

As well as the S60 the next generation XC90, due in 2021, will be built at the plant, which covers 1600 acres on a 2.3-million-square-foot site.

Water charity launches crowdfunding campaign to build a borehole for African village

Wednesday 20 June, 2018Herefordshire-based clean water charity Hope Spring launched a crowdfunding campaign today with the aim of raising £500 to build a borehole for a water-poor African village in Nigeria.

The fundraising campaign was launched on the new crowdfunding platform Donr.

The £500 crowdfunding effort will be added to money already raised by the residents of a village called Gaa Dare, in North Western Nigeria, to construct a hand pump powered borehole. At present, women and children of Gaa Dare have to walk a round trip of over two miles to fetch water from a well in the neighbouring village.

UN figures suggest that women & girls spend 40 billion hours a year collecting water in sub-Saharan Africa. The time spent collecting water could be put to productive use such as education if a simple water source such as a well is near a community. Truancy from girls is also reduced when the water source is closer to home.

According to Hope Spring founder Temi Odurinde, one of the grimmest statistics associated with communities that lack access to clean water is the very high infant mortality rate. According to UN figures, a child dies every minute of the day because of issues related to lack of access to clean water or adequate sanitation. Helping the people of Gaa Dare to build a borehole in their community will help them to take control, prevent diseases and save time lost due to the current absence of clean water.

The cornerstone of Hope Spring water charity's poverty alleviation strategy is to empower developing communities by helping them develop a clean water source in their community. Once a community like Gaa Dare has their own borehole, children will be free from water-fetching duties and can go to school and learn. Getting an education will help the next generation break the poverty cycle they are born into and have a better future.

Donors and sponsors who wish to help Hope Spring Water make the Gaa Dare villagers' dream of a safe, clean water supply possible can make a donation at Hope Spring's crowdfunding page on Donr.

EDISON, N.J., June 20, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ContraVir Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:CTRV), a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of therapeutic drugs for the treatment of hepatitis B virus (HBV), today announced it has regained compliance with Nasdaq listing requirements. In a letter dated June 19, 2018, Nasdaq informed the company that it has achieved compliance with the minimum bid price rule and is in compliance with other applicable requirements required for continued listing on the Nasdaq Capital Market.

*About ContraVir Pharmaceuticals*

ContraVir is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of targeted antiviral therapies with a specific focus on developing a potentially curative therapy for hepatitis B virus (HBV). The company is developing two novel anti-HBV compounds with complementary mechanisms of action. TXL™, a nucleoside analog lipid prodrug of tenofovir (TFV), is designed to deliver higher hepatic intracellular concentrations of the active tenofovir species (tenofovir diphosphate) while reducing concentrations of tenofovir outside the liver, causing fewer off-target toxicities and side-effects. CRV431, the other anti-HBV compound, is a next-generation cyclophilin inhibitor with a novel structure that increases its potency and selective index against HBV. In vitro and in vivo studies have thus far demonstrated that CRV431 reduces HBV DNA and other viral proteins, including surface antigen (HBsAg). More U.S. School Buses Run on New, Low-emission Diesel Technology

New-generation Diesel Engines Power 40% of U.S. School Buses; Diesel Engines Continue as Technology of Choice for 95% of U.S. School Buses

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 20, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Diesel fuel continues to remain the technology of choice for transporting America’s school children by a wide margin, says new data and analysis.

According to analysis by the Diesel Technology Forum of vehicles in operation data provided by IHS Markit, 95 percent of all school buses in operation in the United States in 2017 were powered by diesel engines. Furthermore, 40 percent of America’s school buses use the newest generation of advanced diesel technology (2011 and newer model years), up from just 31 percent in 2016. According to the same data set, about 2.5 percent are powered by gasoline, 1.9 percent by propane, and 0.6 percent by natural gas, with those powered by other means amounting to less than .01 percent.

“Though school districts are about to let out for summer, there’s no letting up on investments in new technology diesel-powered school buses,” said Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum. “With nearly 10 percent more new diesel buses on the road since 2016, it’s clear that – even with a growing field of alternative fuels – school bus fleet managers across the United States continue to see diesel technology as the all-around best choice to get students to and from America’s classrooms.”

Diesel technology has fundamentally transformed in the last decade, and its continued dominance in student transportation reflects school districts’ confidence in selecting a technology with a record of continuous improvement and low-cost operation. The new generation of advanced diesel technology buses are equipped with selective catalytic reduction and particulate control technologies, which combine to achieve near-zero emissions for both particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).

“It’s clear no other fuel can match the combination of factors offered by the newest generation of diesel technology: efficient performance, reliability, durability, low-cost operation, and maximum flexibility in utilization, routing and fueling,” continued Schaeffer. “Alternative fuels all require compromises and have higher upfront costs and unknowns, which explains their continued relatively low penetration into the school bus fleet.”

Recent findings from the Health Effects Institute (HEI) affirm the near-zero emissions performance of new-technology diesel buses. The HEI’s Advanced Collaborative Emissions Study (ACES) study found that, when combined with aftertreatment technologies, “modern diesel engines are highly effective and that they meet – and exceed – the [emission] reductions mandated by U.S. and EURO regulations.” The ACES study reports that new-technology diesel engines offer a 90 percent reduction in particulate matter and a 94 percent reduction in smog-forming NOx compounds, when compared to older generations of the technology.

“Innovation in diesel technology continues to add to its benefits: using blends of U.S.-grown advanced renewable biodiesel fuel in either existing or new diesel engines can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an additional 50 percent to 85 percent,” said Schaeffer. “A growing number of school districts around the country are choosing these advanced renewable biodiesel fuels for their buses because they amplify school districts’ ability to lower their carbon footprints and green their communities.”

School districts looking to upgrade their aging fleets could find funding opportunities in their states’ Volkswagen (VW) Environmental Mitigation Trust settlement. Compared to alternative-fueled school buses, clean diesel bus upgrades offer a more cost-effective option and gain more NOx reductions for the dollar.

FIFA World Cup 2018: 'Lay off Messi', says Argentina coach before Croatia clash

$

Argentina's coach urged fans on Wednesday to stop blaming Lionel Messi when games do not go to script and instead appreciate all their captain has done for the national side over the years.

Messi was furious with himself for missing a penalty in the South Americans' opener against Iceland, which ended 1-1 in an inauspicious start for what may be his last chance to emulate Diego Maradona's feat of winning a World Cup for Argentina.

"Messi can't be the only guilty one. When he scores, all Argentines celebrate, so when he misses, we can't jump on him alone ... that's too easy a way to think," smarted Jorge Sampaoli on the eve of their next Group D game, against Croatia.

"I told him 'This is the World Cup of 40 million (Argentinians). You made a mistake, I made a mistake, we all made a mistake' ... The team will be together when things go well and when things go badly."

Under pressure himself after an underwhelming year in charge of Argentina despite an extraordinary array of individual talent at his disposal, Sampaoli was bombarded with questions about his controversial use of three central defenders. He insisted it gave him flexibility to adapt against different opponents, but acknowledged Argentina needed to be more "elastic" in their play.

Their next opponents Croatia comfortably dispatched Nigeria 2-0 in their first game, putting themselves in pole position to go through. "It's going to be difficult. Croatia have a generation of outstanding players who have just won," Sampaoli said.

While much has been made of Argentina's over-dependence on their out-and-out star, who turns 31 this weekend and may well be at his last World Cup, Sampaoli said fortunately the obsession with Messi also destabilised others.

"When he has two or three opponents trying to block him, somewhere on the pitch a teammate is free, as happened against Iceland," he said. "We need to take advantage of that."

Sampaoli also appealed to Argentines to stop arguing about whether Messi is better or worse than Maradona, who won the World Cup in 1986, and appreciate both men's contributions to their nation's sporting history.

"They are different. Their contexts are different," he said, urging fans to look at the overall record of Messi, who is Argentina's all-time stop scorer. "With Leo, Argentina have only lost three or four games ... He's a national hero, as Diego was. Every Argentinian has the No. 10 of Messi and the No. 10 of Maradona, that is priceless."
