Leading Plumbing Manufacturer Launches Declare Labels, Adds More Environmental Product Declarations

KOHLER, Wis. (PRWEB) June 05, 2018

Today, in recognition of World Environmental Day, Kohler Co. announces expansion of its environmental and human health product disclosures for its kitchen and bath products.

Kohler has released its first Declare human health product labels for two popular enameled cast iron fixtures – the Villager® bathtub and the Brockway™ sink. Declare labels, similar to food ingredient labels, detail the material composition of the fixtures and help inform consumers about the safety of the products they use every day. Declare labels are produced using a format developed by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), and they fulfill product disclosure requirements in the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building rating system.

Kohler’s engineering and operations team worked together for more than six months on the project.

“Developing our first Declare labels required gathering details on the sourced raw material from each supplier, the quantity of naturally occurring impurities, and the final material composition after undergoing chemical transformation during the casting and firing process,” said Jeff Zeman, principal engineer for product sustainability engineering at Kohler. “Architects and designers have asked for information about the products they specify for building projects, and knowing the exact makeup of the raw materials help us continue to invest in product innovation that benefits our customers.”

Kohler also recently expanded availability of environmental product declarations (EPDs) for its plumbing fixtures produced for North American and select Asian markets, which helps architects and interior designers maximize the credits they can achieve when targeting a building for LEED certification.

Kohler has achieved third-party certification through UL to create on-demand EPDs for more than 1,000 primary kitchen and bath fixtures, or more than 10,000 total product SKUs when accounting for color and finish variations. With this expansion, Kohler offers more EPDs than any other building products manufacturer.

“Kohler has long been known as an industry leader in water efficiency,” said Rob Zimmerman, director of sustainability at Kohler. “Providing clear, easy-to-understand environmental and human health data on the products we manufacture takes our sustainability commitment one step further. In partnership with the green building industry, we strive to ensure that all residential and commercial buildings contribute to the overall health of their occupants while minimizing their environmental footprint.”

Because Kohler environmental engineers worked with operations leaders to collect energy, water and waste data at 14 of the company’s manufacturing facilities and apply it to individual products, the company achieved UL certification at the facility level instead of the typical product-by-product approach other manufacturers use. This maximizes the number of KOHLER and Sterling products with available EPDs and provides data-supported insights that give Kohler product development teams an edge in designing the next generation of more environmentally favorable plumbing products. Next the teams will gather information to develop EPDs for KOHLER faucets and showering products, planned for 2019.

In April, Kohler was one of 34 building products manufacturers that publicly committed to product transparency in a letter from ILFI mailed to architects, designers and other influential leaders in the green building industry. Kohler is currently working with ILFI to create Declare labels for additional fixtures, to launch later this year.

Huobi Chain Project Plots Course Toward a Decentralized Financial Platform Huobi is announcing the launch of the Huobi Chain Project (HCP) and the Huobi Chain Superhero Championship Program (HCSCP). With the HCP and HCSCP initiatives, Huobi wants to build a next-generation, decentralized financial platform.Huobi, headquartered in Singapore, is a global digital currency trading platform and exchange with offices in Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and the United States. According to the company, Huobi’s digital asset exchange has accumulated a trading volume of $1 trillion and serves more than 5 million users in over 130 countries.

According to data provided by CoinMarketCap, Huobi is currently the world’s third largest crypto exchange by trade volume, trading about $1.2 billion a day at the time of writing. The Huobi group is pursuing a diversified strategy, as shown by the recent launch of a crypto-oriented Exchange Traded Fund (ETF).

"Huobi is moving to Huobi Chain for a couple of reasons,” Gordon Chen, a senior Huobi executive in charge of the project, said in conversation with Bitcoin Magazine. “First, we believe in the decentralized future where some form of autonomous organization will replace corporations today. Huobi wants to make history and lead this transition. We see this as a grand experiment. Second, we think that this new world needs a new financial infrastructure, which is what we are hoping Huobi Chain will be.”

Huobi wants to develop the HCP into a decentralized, autonomous platform for value exchange, fundraising, securitization and more. Once the project is completed, Huobi plans to gradually migrate its operations onto the Huobi Chain. Huobi claims that the HCP is the first global experiment of its kind to transform a centralized corporation to a decentralized organization.

“Our dream is for Huobi to run on the public blockchain and become a truly decentralized autonomous organization,” Huobi Founder and CEO Leon Li stated in a press release.

HCSCP Competition

Huobi is launching the HCSCP competition, divided in ten milestones, with prizes to incentivize the community to participate in building the Huobi public chain and selecting a partner to lead the HCP. The company will fund the project with an initial investment of 20 million Huobi Tokens (HT), which is equivalent to about $100 million at the current exchange rate.

“Upon completion, all of the code will be open-sourced and we will also gradually migrate Huobi onto this new public blockchain,” Li explained. “Going forward, a percentage of Huobi’s yearly revenue will also be made available to fund the program.”

According to information provided by Huobi to Bitcoin Magazine, the HCSCP will follow a 21-month long program structure. The program will start by seeking out a global leader to lead the development efforts of the Huobi Chain Project. The Huobi Chain Project will then be divided into 10 milestones, each with a large prize pool; each milestone is a contest between teams from different parts of the world. New teams can join the contest at any milestone based on the open-sourced code from previous milestones. Upon completion, all of the code will be open-sourced, and the winning teams will share the prize.

Washington, DC, June 06, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army Gen. Mark A. Milley honors Senior Vice President Philip Tobey, FAIA, FACHA, ASHE with the Outstanding Civilian Service Award during the Salute from the Chief.

The Salute from the Chief is an event that allows the Chief of Staff, on behalf of the U.S. Army, to honor civilians that give back to the military. Tobey is being honored for his efforts to the Wounded Warriors in the design of the Center for the Intrepid at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, the National Intrepid Center of Excellence in Bethesda, Maryland, as well as his ongoing work for the National Intrepid Center of Excellence satellite campuses on bases across the country.

Tobey served as principal-in-charge and senior planner for the Center for the Intrepid (CFI), the world’s most highly advanced rehabilitation center for soldiers recovering from severe injuries, burns, and amputations. The CFI, which opened in 2007, provides state-of-the-art rehabilitation combined with sophisticated translational research in prosthetics, robotics, virtual reality, and biomechanics. This unique facility also houses first-of-its-kind technology, such as a 300-degree virtual reality immersion environment and an advanced gait analysis laboratory, developed specifically for the CFI.

Tobey subsequently served as principal-in-charge on the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), which opened in 2010. The new global center of excellence advances the research, diagnosis, and treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI)—a complex injury that results in a broad range of cognitive, physical and psychological disabilities, which has become the ‘signature wound’ of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The NICoE is designed around a new operational model in rehabilitation medicine that focuses care around the patient, using a multidisciplinary concept that seamlessly integrates next-generation clinical and research technologies, as well as deeper family involvement.

Both the CFI and the NICoE are entirely new models of care and are breaking new ground in the successful diagnosis, treatment and research of these devastating injuries. The NICoE model is now being replicated in nine satellite TBI facilities distributed nationwide; to date, seven are completed and two are currently in design.

Tobey began his career as a captain and military architect at Headquarters, U.S. Air Force Office of the Surgeon General, with review responsibility for medical projects worldwide. He was awarded the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal for his contributions in developing new programming and planning criteria for Army, Navy and Air Force medical facilities, and served as architect on special assignment to the White House for all executive branch medical facilities.

Tobey has continued to focus much of his career on military health, planning and designing millions of square feet of healthcare space on five continents and twenty countries for all branches of the military and Veterans Affairs. In recognition of his expertise, the Assistant Secretary of Defense appointed Tobey to the United States Defense Health Board. In 2013, he was appointed to the Congressionally-mandated Independent Review Panel on Military Medical Construction Standards to provide independent advice to the secretary on the military health system. Recently, he was recipient of the Urbahn Medal of the Society of American Military Engineers, awarded to one person annually for excellence in design.

Tobey earned his master’s degree in architecture from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design. He has been named a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and is a fellow and founding member of the American College of Healthcare Architects.
