Commentary: Archbishop Ladaria and the transgender movement

$

Vatican City, May 30, 2018 / 11:06 am (CNA/EWTN News).- This week Archbishop Luis Ladaria, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, issued (another) definitive statement on the reservation of priestly ordination to men alone. In doing so he rightly noted that continued speculation about the possibility of women priests in some quarters was “of serious concern” and “creates serious confusion among the faithful.”

The ongoing discussion of, or agitation for, women’s ordination seems to be an exercise in never taking no for an answer, even when that answer is the unbroken practice of the Church for millennia and is definitively reaffirmed by the popes, including St. John Paul II and Francis.

Even as Archbishop Ladaria patiently underscored that as a “tenenda” teaching – one which is to be held by all the faithful – a male-only priesthood was simply not up for discussion, now or ever, one could detect soft rejection in how it was reported. Some media outlets, even ostensibly Catholic ones, insist that the teaching was “called definitive” rather than “is definitive.” It is a subtle qualification, but one which seeks to relativize the empirical; what is called definitive today might be called something else tomorrow.

The question/non-question of women’s ordination feels like it has been around forever, and refuses to go away. In reality it is a very modern issue. For almost two thousand years an all male priesthood was a given. It went undisputed even after the Reformation, which saw whole swathes of Christendom depart from basic sacramental truth and practice. Why then has it become such a fixture on the ecclesiastical landscape?

The movement for women’s ordination is rooted in the cultural revolution of the second half of the twentieth century. It is a strand of classical feminism, for which the stumbling block remains access to power. But the exclusion from power, if we must see it that way, applies to all the laypeople – men and women – who make up the vast majority of the Church.

As a lay man, I feel no particular disenfranchisement because of this. Nor do I feel that the simple fact of being a man gives me some smug internal consolation that “I could if I wanted to.” I no more feel I could have been a priest had I wanted to than I can make myself a father. That I am neither a father nor a priest does not challenge my identity as a man, nor does my inability to make myself either. I am who and what God made me, with my own dignity and vocation.

Sadly, you do not have to look far in the world to see people for whom identity as a man or a woman is a profound source of existential crisis. The unwillingness of some thinkers, both in and out of the Church, to move past a stance of “no means not yet” in relation to women’s ordination, and the focus on the priesthood as a sine qua non measure of equal dignity, represents a missed opportunity for the common expression and celebration of the real dignity and power of authentic womanhood and masculinity, both of which are under direct attack by the transgender movement.

The subversion of the basic facts of who we are is real. One isn’t even supposed to speak of the “fact” of being a man or a woman anymore.

Men and women are different. It should not be a controversial statement, but it is. In the world of gender fluidity nothing is certain, not even who you are. It is no surprise, then, if we end up with a generation of isolated existentialists. The Church has something to say to these people and it desperately needs to be heard.

There is no doubt about the created order or the essential dignity of men and women. Genesis tells us that “male and female he created them” and he knew what he was doing. Even from a more secularist perspective, the traditional feminist movement has always held the essential difference between men and women as not just a biological fact but an existential reality to be celebrated, even if there was a balance to be redressed.

An interesting side effect of the transgender movement is that Catholics and classical feminists suddenly find themselves fighting from the same corner. If they started speaking together on the real and inherent dignity of men and women, it would be a powerful force for sanity and good in our world.

Since Vatican Council II, the Church has made great strides in articulating the priestly vocation as a particular ministry of service, and not one of domination. Laypeople cannot “exercise” the power of governance, no. But they can “cooperate” in its exercise. At the local level, this means serving as ecclesiastical judges, as chancellors of dioceses, and so on. At the highest levels, more roles are opening up, even in the curia: last year Pope Francis appointed two women to senior positions at the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.

As this becomes more commonplace, it is to be hoped that the myopic focus of a few on women’s ordination will fall away, leaving Archbishop Ladaria, and even some of those he is currently correcting, free to focus their efforts where they can do the most good.

The transgender movement is leaving an increasing number of casualties in its wake. The best treatment that can be offered them is the truth that God made them who they are, loves them as they are, and knew what he was doing.

The 'Star Wars' character who came back in a shocking 'Solo' cameo was just 'one of the candidates' for the role **

*Warning: This post contains spoilers for "Solo: A Star Wars Story."*

· *"Solo: A Star Wars Story" has a secret cameo of a "Star Wars" character we didn't think we'd see again: Darth Maul, last seen in 1999's "The Phantom Menace."*
· *But there were other candidates for who the cameo would be, and it wasn't official until after director Ron Howard was hired and pushed hard for Maul.*
· *"I thought when I came in, I assumed they knew who it was and they were just keeping it under wraps," Howard said in an interview with Slashfilm. "And they didn’t. But Maul was listed as one of the candidates. And I lobbied hard for that."*

--------------------

A "Star Wars" character we didn't think we'd see again on the big screen returns in a top-secret cameo in "Solo: A Star Wars Story," but the character wasn't finalized until after director Ron Howard replaced original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

In the movie, after Paul Bettany's Dryden Vos is killed, it's revealed that Darth Maul is the true boss of a crime organization called Crimson Dawn. Maul was last seen in "The Phantom Menace" in 1999 as a Sith Lord who gets sliced in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi. For those not familiar with the expanded "Star Wars" universe, Maul was considered deceased. But in the cartoon series, "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," he is resurrected with robotic limbs.

In an interview with Slashfilm, Howard said the cameo was written "in a generic way" and with "a lot of uncertainty" in the script, which only labeled the cameo as "Boss." Howard said there were other candidates for who the crime boss would be, and he pushed hard for it to be Maul.

"I thought when I came in, I assumed they knew who it was and they were just keeping it under wraps," he told Slashfilm. "And they didn’t. But Maul was listed as one of the candidates. And I lobbied hard for that. I thought that made a lot of sense to me. I found that character to be really effective."

Howard said that he was convinced by his 31-year-old son Reed's reaction, who is a "dedicated 'Star Wars' fan" and thought the idea was "incredibly cool."

"And so for that generation, I thought, well that was gonna be a pretty interesting idea," Howard continued. "And doing a little more research and understanding sort of how the character had worked elsewhere, I thought it was good."

Howard said that they shot the Maul scene twice because the first time "wasn't quite Maul enough yet."

"Added the lightsaber," he said. "And intensified it. And definitely took a big jump."

Singapore Airlines will relaunch the longest flight in the world that will fly more than 10,000 miles and last 19 hours· *Singapore Airlines confirmed that it will relaunch non-stop flights between New York and Singapore on October 11, 2018.*
· *The Singapore-New York flights will be the longest in the world with a distance of roughly 10,300 miles and a travel time of nearly 19 hours. *
· *The flights will operate daily between Singapore Changi International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport using new Airbus A350-900ULR airliners.*
· *The Airbus A350-900ULRs will have just 161 seats on board — 67 business and 94 premium economy.*

--------------------

Singapore Airlines confirmed on Wednesday that it will relaunch its non-stop service between New York and Singapore this October.

With a distance of approximately 10,300 miles and a travel time of up to 18 hours 45 minutes, it will also be the longest non-stop flight in the world. The current long-distance leader is Qatar Airways' 9,000 miles flight from Doha to Auckland, New Zealand. Singapore will deploy its new fleet of next generation, carbon composite Airbus A350-900ULR airliners for the flight. (ULR stands for ultra long range.)

The new non-stop service is expected to commence on October 11 and will operate daily between Singapore's Changi International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

Flights between New York and Singapore are currently operated using the double-decker Airbus A380 with a stopover in Frankfurt, Germany.

"Singapore Airlines has always taken pride in pushing the boundaries to provide the best possible travel convenience for our customers," Singapore Airlines CEO, Goh Choon Phong, said in a statement. "We are pleased to be leading the way with these new non-stop flights using the latest-technology, ultra-long-range Airbus A350-900ULR."

Singapore's A350-900ULRs will be equipped with 67 business class and 94 premium economy seats. There are no first class suites or economy class seats on board. With just 161 seats, the ULRs will carry 92 fewer passengers than the rest of Singapore's A350-900 fleet.

The airline previously operated the route using all-business class Airbus A340-500 airliners before suspending the service in 2013. The airline simply couldn't sustain the route financially using the fuel-guzzling, four-engined A340 with just 100 seats on board.

Singapore believes this new generation of ultra-fuel, efficient twin-engine wide-bodies like the A350-900ULR will be able to make the route profitable.

The new Newark-Singapore route will mark the official entry into service for the A350-900ULR. Singapore is the plane's launch customer with seven on order. The airline is expected to take delivery of its first ULR in September with all seven to be delivered by the end of the year.

The airline is also planning to use the ULR on its soon-to-be-announced non-stop Singapore-Los Angeles route.

Post-Mugabe Elections: Zimbabwe sets July 30 for presidential and parliamentary elections

$
0
0
Zimbabwe will hold presidential and parliamentary elections on July 30, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said on Wednesday, a vote he promises will be free and fair with international monitoring after the ouster of 94-year-old strongman Robert Mugabe.

Mnangagwa, who took power after the November military coup against Mugabe, counts on the election to bolster his legitimacy as he pursues a promised break with Mugabe's repressive policies while urging foreign investors to return to Zimbabwe.

Missing from the July ballot for the first time in 20 years will be Zimbabwe's foremost political gladiators, Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai, the longtime opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader who died of cancer in February.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) said it had picked companies in southern Africa to print ballot papers and supply voting ink. The MDC wanted printing of ballots to be put to an open tender, but this was rejected by the government.

ZEC chairwoman Priscilla Chigumba told reporters that the commission's partners, including U.N. agencies, would provide a quarter of the $198 million budget needed to hold the elections.

Mnangagwa has invited the Commonwealth to monitor voting in Zimbabwe for the first time since 2002 when Harare was suspended from the group over accusations of rigged elections. He has applied for Zimbabwe to rejoin the Commonwealth.

If the election is approved by international monitors, it could be a key step to unlocking foreign lending to Zimbabwe, which has been largely cut off for two decades.

The vote is being cast as a fight between the old guard of Zimbabwe's 1970s independence war and a younger generation.

Mnangagwa's main challenger is 40-year-old Nelson Chamisa from the MDC, who has energised the party, drawing huge crowds at rallies in some of the ruling ZANU-PF party's rural redoubts.

Sixty percent of the 5.4 million voters on the new register are under 50 years old, according to official data.

The Constitutional Court on Wednesday dismissed an application by Zimbabweans living abroad to be allowed to vote. The court did not immediately give a reason.

In a brief statement in an official government gazette, Mnangagwa said he had fixed July 30 "as the day of the election of the president, the election of members of the national assembly and election of councillors."

Prospective candidates will be registered on June 14. A presidential run-off vote is set for Sept. 8 if no candidate gets at least the 50 percent-plus-one vote required to win.

*LEGITIMACY*

For the 75-year-old Mnangagwa, victory would accord him democratic legitimacy after taking power following the coup.

Mnangagwa urged ZANU-PF primary election candidates at a meeting on Wednesday to unite to ensure victory. He forecast that ZANU-PF would prevail over the more than 100 political parties expressing an interest in contesting the election.

Nicknamed "Crocodile" for his secretive and insular demeanour, Mnangagwa goes into the election with the advantage of incumbency, allowing him access to state resources for his campaign.

Crucially, Mnangagwa enjoys the backing of the army, which analysts say remains averse to any leader who, unlike him, lacks a pedigree from the liberation war against white rule.

"Though the election looks like it will go to the wire, the greater likelihood, based on cold-blooded analysis, is that experience, depth and state incumbency will triumph over youthfulness," said Eldred Masunungure, a professor of political science at the University of Zimbabwe.

Critics say Mnangagwa was Mugabe's most loyal acolyte and blame him for a government crackdown on rebels loyal to political rival Joshua Nkomo in the mid-1980s that rights groups say killed 20,000 civilians.

Mnangagwa has denied the charges and says political freedoms have improved under his short tenure and that he is repairing frosty relations with the West.

Nintendo has 4 new Pokémon games coming to the Switch, and the first is available now for free — here's everything we know (NTDOY)

Nintendo has 4 new Pokémon games coming to the Switch, and the first is available now for free — here's everything we know (NTDOY) The long wait is over: There's a brand new Pokémon game available on Nintendo's Switch right now.

Admittedly, "Pokémon Quest" may not have been the Pokémon game that Nintendo Switch owners were expecting.

Given that Nintendo already announced that a "core" Pokémon game is coming to the Nintendo Switch, it was a major surprise on Tuesday night when the Japanese game giant announced three new Pokémon games.

To be clear, those three new games are in addition to the still-in-development core game (that's now expected in the second half of 2019). That game, whenever it launches, is expected to usher in the first new "generation" of Pokémon since "Pokémon Sun & Moon" came out in late 2016.

Meanwhile, the first game of the newly-announced bunch, "Pokémon Quest," is already available on the Nintendo Switch. Later this year, we're getting "Pokémon: Let's Go," a remake of 1999's "Pokémon Yellow." In true series fashion, "Let's Go Pokémon" will come in two different versions, starring mascot monsters Pikachu and Eevee.

Here's everything we know about Pokémon's huge future on Nintendo's wildly popular Switch:

-Nintendo has four Pokémon games headed to the Switch, with the first available right now.-

In an event in Tokyo this week, The Pokémon Company revealed a trio of new Pokémon games headed to the wildly popular Nintendo Switch.

-"Pokémon Quest" (available now, for free)
-"Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!" and "Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!" (available on November 16, for $60 each)

The fourth game — an unnamed "core" Pokémon game, first announced last year — is currently in development. It's scheduled for launch in the second half of 2019. -The first game to launch, "Pokémon Quest," isn't a typical Pokémon game. But it is pretty good!-

In "Pokémon Quest," players cultivate a home base of wild Pokémon with which to take on hordes of enemy Pokémon in various — you guessed it! — quests.

Well, that's not entirely accurate. There are indeed quests in the game, but the main thrust of it is leveling up your group of fighting Pokémon by winning battles and collecting loot. Since the game is "free to start," there are options built in to buy in-game currency with real money, which can then be used for virtual items in the game.

That said, in the time I spent with "Pokémon Quest" this morning, I have mostly positive things to say. It's certainly not a traditional Pokémon game, but it sure is immediately fun. Battles are simple at first, but ramp up in difficulty quickly; you'll need tactical thinking if you want to win consistently.

It looks and plays like a good mobile game, which makes sense — "Pokémon Quest" is headed to iPhone and Android in June.-Take a look at "Pokémon Quest" right here:-

  *PRESS RELEASE*
31 May 2018

*Quality deviations on certain welds of the secondary circuit at the Flamanville EPR: the investigation continues*

On 10 April 2018, EDF informed the French Nuclear Safety Authority (Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire) of a significant event relating to the detection of deviations during checks of certain welds of the main secondary circuit at the Flamanville EPR, and ordered a report analysing the causes and nature of these deviations.*
On the basis of the investigations carried out by EDF, discussions with the Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire will continue for several more weeks.
The impact on the schedule and if necessary, on the cost of the Flamanville 3 project will be announced then.
As a delay of several months to the start-up of the Flamanville 3 EPR reactor is one of the possible outcomes, EDF is getting prepared to continue operating the two reactors at the Fessenheim nuclear power station until summer 2019.

Gurman: WWDC 2018 to Have Software Focus, New Macs, iPad Pros, and Larger-Screen Apple Watches Coming Later

$

Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference commences on Monday with an opening keynote, where the company previews the next major versions of its software platforms, and usually shares some other announcements.
Ahead of the keynote, Bloomberg's well-sourced Mark Gurman has outlined what he expects Apple to discuss on stage:

· A series of Digital Health tools in the Settings app on iOS 12 that will help users monitor how much time they spend using their devices and individual apps, helping to address concerns about smartphone addiction.

· ARKit 2, including a new mode that allows for a multiplayer mode in augmented reality games. Another mode is said to allow objects to be dropped into an area and virtually remain in place.

· Apple could reveal its reported plans to allow iOS apps to run on Macs as early as this year. The wording suggests it's not entirely clear if Apple plans to discuss the project at WWDC or later.

· Minor new features for snoozing notifications, tracking the stock market, making video calls, and sending Animojis via FaceTime.

Overall, Gurman expects this year's software updates across iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS to be more "muted," with "bigger changes later," as Apple has decided to focus more on the quality and stability improvements this year, according to an internal meeting the company reportedly held earlier this year.

Planned new features that have been shelved until 2019 are said to include a redesigned home screen with more information, an artificial intelligence upgrade to the Photos app, and new file-management tools for iPads.

Unfortunately for those hoping to see Apple refresh its product lineups at WWDC, Gurman suggests that "a suite of new gadgets is unlikely," although a surprise hardware announcement or two cannot be entirely ruled out. Hopefully, an update will also be provided about Apple's AirPower charging mat.

Gurman claims Apple is working on refreshed MacBook, MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Watch models, and a new low-cost MacBook, but he doesn't expect any of those devices to be ready until "later this year."

· Refreshes to the 12-inch MacBook and MacBook Pro lines with next-generation Intel chips ready "later this year."

· A new low-cost notebook to succeed the MacBook Air ready "later this year."

· A redesigned iPad Pro line with Face ID is also expected "later."

· A pair of new Apple Watch models that keep the overall size of the current models, but include slightly larger, edge-to-edge screens. The new models are expected to support watch bands from existing models.

Gurman outlined most of these expectations in his previous reporting over the past year.

WWDC's opening keynote begins on Monday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. MacRumors will be in attendance at the keynote, with live coverage both here on MacRumors.com and through our @MacRumorsLive account on Twitter.

MacRumors will also have pre-event coverage, beginning around 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time, and post-event hands-on coverage if applicable.Related Roundup: WWDC 2018

Fanfare has Bridged the Gap Between Brands, Influencers and Audience and is now integrating Blockchain to Unlock the True Value of Social Commerce

*SINGAPORE / ACCESSWIRE / May 31, 2018 */ A picture describes what a thousand words cannot, a video conveys better than a thousand pictures. It is with this in mind that Fanfare has launched an inventive video-sharing social commerce ecosystem to connect brands and users easily. Let us see what the Fanfare Social Commerce Ecosystem is all about and how they function in the market.

*A Brief Background of How the Market Functions *

We are all familiar with eCommerce and social media. It would be uncommon to find someone who has not interacted on social media. Similarly, the world is rapidly moving on the eCommerce front as more people gravitate towards online purchases at an overwhelming rate. The proliferation of smartphones has also hastened these processes.

We are reaching the stage where ecommerce is on the verge of overtaking traditional retail commerce with respect to popularity and revenue generation. Hence, businesses and brands are spending a lot of money on online and digital marketing. There is a need to integrate both the ecommerce and the social media networks to cater to a growing mobile savvy and diverse global audience.

The widespread use of social media has changed the way brands do their advertising campaigns. There is a tremendous shift from the usual written content-based advertising to video advertising because people relate to videos much better than they do to written content or pictures/images. Brands can leverage this consumer preference to their advantage.

This integration of eCommerce with social media has given rise to a new frontier called social commerce. The use of consumer-generated word-of-mouth content as a way to market and advertise a brand's products through the social media network eliminates the role of the middlemen.

*The Vision of Fanfare *

This is the age where people love to create and upload videos to their social media channels. Business brands can take advantage of this phenomenon to promote their content through such user-generated videos. Fanfare has fulfilled the vision of influencing the audience to buy the product directly from the video content. The brands can introduce a link in the video allowing the viewer to access the eStore directly by clicking on this link.

The Fanfare ecosystem has bridged the gap between the brands, influencers, and the audience. They have launched the ERC-20 Fanfare token (Fan Token), a standard digital currency unit for social commerce connecting brands, content creators, and end-consumers.

*How Do They Propose to Do it? *

Let us briefly look at the mechanism:

· Video content creators can get remunerated in the form of Fan Tokens when the brands verify their videos and/or convert their user-generated videos into shoppable videos.
· Users can also benefit in the arrangement by spending time watching and liking these videos or take part in voting for their favourite videos in the brand campaigns.
· Users can redeem these Fan Tokens to purchase products from the Fanfare eStore.
· They could get additional discounts and benefits/rewards when they buy from the Fanfare eStore.

It looks simple, doesn't it? But, there are gaps to fill, because eCommerce and social media function on two entirely different platforms. Fanfare has managed to integrate these two platforms and bridge the gaps with the launch of the Fanfare User App and Fanfare Brand App. With the infusion of Blockchain technology, the full potential of its current social commerce ecosystem will be unleashed.

*How Will Blockchain Technology Unleash the Full Potential of Fanfare?*

Fanfare has already enabled brands, content creator, and consumers to engage and communicate in one universal and unifying language on a single platform.

The shared currency (ERC-20 FAN Token) will be the standard remuneration for the content creator and the consumer-powered by smart contracts. The use of Blockchain technology brings in an element of transparency as every user can verify it thereby eliminating the need of a third party. As there are no intermediaries, the transactions are efficient, and there is an equitable distribution of the rewards.

Blockchain technology reduces the advertising expenses for the brands thereby allowing them to pass on the benefits to the consumers, as well as the content creators. Hence, it is a win-win-win situation for all the three parties involved in the transaction. As it uses digital currency, the Blockchain mechanism also benefits people with no access to banks.
